The office area was impressive, but Jenna could only look at the fancy furnishings and wonder if re-adoptions had helped pay for the dark wood desk, soft carpet and sleek oil paintings adorning the walls.

One potentially illegal adoption could be explained away as a mistake, but if Darnell had brokered several, as she suspected, he must have known he was breaking the law.

The idea that he’d willingly gone along with putting teenage girls, or other children, in harm’s way made her sick to her stomach.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t arrest the guy based on her gut feelings. They needed proof. The adoption papers they’d taken from the Bronsons’ were a good start, but certainly not enough.

Which was exactly why they were here. To find something more to go on. Anything to give them a hint as to where to find the other girls.

Griff wrapped his hand in the fabric of his sweatshirt and tried the door handle. Of course it was locked.

“Maybe we should leave,” Claire said in a shaky voice reeking of uncertainty. “We can’t break the lock. He’ll know we were here.”

Jenna flashed her sister a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. We’re not going to damage anything.”

Griff pulled out his wallet and extracted a thin card. He glanced back at Jenna. “I need you to hold the light so I can see. This will take two hands.”

“I didn’t think the credit-card trick worked very well,” Jenna said. She took the phone from his hand and held the device at an angle so the beam of light illuminated the door handle.

He shrugged. “It’s a long shot, but we’ve come this far.”

Since he was right, she didn’t say anything more. Sliding the card into the narrow crack between the door and the frame, he jiggled the card in an attempt to pop the lock open.

Griff persisted with a patient diligence that she couldn’t help but admire. She would have given up after the first few attempts, but he continued to work at the joint between the door and the frame again and again.

Jenna swallowed a wave of frustration. She glanced around the spacious reception area, wondering if it would be easier to pry into the receptionist’s desk to search for keys.

Suddenly there was a loud click and the door opened. Claire gasped in surprise and Jenna put a hand on Griff’s shoulder, aware of the warmth seeping through the fleece to singe her fingers. She quickly moved backward, putting distance between them. “Nice job.”

“Don’t touch anything with your bare hands,” Griff warned as they eased into Darnell’s personal office space.

Jenna returned his phone, then pulled hers out to use as a flashlight. She moved cautiously, trying to avoid getting too close to the windows that lined the wall. She turned toward the huge desk, and the beam of light bounced over a picture of Darnell standing between two teenage boys. His kids, she presumed, and he was likely divorced since there wasn’t a photograph of his wife anywhere to be seen.

“I hate him for what he did to me,” Claire whispered beside her, staring at the photograph in horror.
